Wellbeing 2 - A National Study of Wellbeing of Hospital Doctors in Ireland

Doctors’ wellbeing matters - for patients, teams, and for the healthcare system as a whole. Wellbeing 2 explores how doctors are coping today, ten years after the first landmark study.

A National Study of the Wellbeing of Hospital Doctors in Ireland

A decade after the first national study, we want to explore the wellbeing of doctors working in Irish hospitals. Wellbeing 2 aims to answer this question and provide high quality data on the psychological and workplace wellbeing of doctors. Your participation will help us understand what has changed over the past ten years, and what still needs to improve to support doctors working in Irish hospitals today.

About Wellbeing 2

Wellbeing 2 is a national cross-sectional study examining the wellbeing of hospital doctors in Ireland, ten years after the First National Wellbeing Study carried out in 2014.

Sponsored by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and supported by all postgraduate training bodies, Wellbeing 2 wants to measure the personal and workplace wellbeing of hospital doctors and compare results to the orginal study, in addition to taking into account the signficant changes in the healthcare landscape over the last 10 years.

The Principal Investigator is Professor Blánaid Hayes who conducted the original Wellbeing 1 study and she is collaborating with the Co-Investigator Dr Mary Teresa O’Neill (Aspire Fellow).

An expert advisory group with representatives from psychiatry, psychology, occupational medicine, general practice, and health and wellbeing has contributed to the design of the questionnaire.

Who can take part?

Consultants, NCHDs and GP trainees working in Irish hospitals are invited to take part in the study and complete a questionnaire covering personal and workplace wellbeing, career satisfaction, and lifestyle behaviours.

Wellbeing of Doctors in Ireland – Then & Now

In 2014, the first National Wellbeing Study examined working life in Irish hospitals and found that:

  • Doctors worked an average of 57 hours per week
  • 82% of doctors experienced workplace stress, with 1 in 3 reporting burnout symptoms
  • Only 22% reported good work–life balance
  • 70% wouldn’t want others to know if they experiencing mental health difficulties
  • Yet, 70% said they still love what they do and have a strong desire to practice medicine

The  findings laid the groundwork for implementing initiatives including establishing wellbeing committees in the postgraduate colleges and starting the conversation of doctor wellbeing by national bodies and by the HSE.
